Betancourt was walking toward a bus stop on Little River Turnpike in Lincolnia on May 22 after finishing a shift at her work. As she crossed the street at the intersection of Oasis Drive around 10:30 p.m., a 2007 Honda CRV crashed into her and sped away, Fairfax County police said

Paramedics rushed the Annandale High School sophomore to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police announced her death on Monday, June 6.

Abraham Lincoln Samuel, 21, of Springfield, called police the night of the crash to turn himself in, Fairfax County police said. Officials charged him with felony hit and run, but prosecutors may amend those charges after Betancourt's death, police added.

Police are still investigating the crash, but they do not believe alcohol contributed to the cause.

Daniela Bonilla Betancourt's family started a GoFundMe campaign recently to help pay for her funeral costs. The fundraising platform has verified the authenticity of this campaign, an employee of the company confirmed.

Betancourt immigrated to the United States with her mom, Mibel, and her family hopes to bury her in her native country. Though, the GoFundMe campaign does not say which country that is.

They hope to raise $40,000 to pay for it as her mother cannot afford it. So far, they have raised more than $6,000 from 71 donors.

"We will never forget Daniela as a happy and sweet soul," the family wrote.
